- TESTIMONIALS -

Loved the workshop, and Alice was truly a sweetheart. Those two hours were very productive and you leave with enough knowledge to carry on practicing on your own. Will definitely recommend, and will come back for the Practice Club evenings :)

ANA, VINTAGE HEAVEN, SEPT 2018

So good I’ve been twice. Alice is lovely, hilarious and a brilliant teacher. The venue for the class is wonderful too, a lovely hidden gem in London.

HELEN, TOWN HOUSE, SEPT 2018

Alice is incredibly talented and always ready to help you. She is extremely knowledgeable on calligraphy with her many years of experience and she will give you all the tips to make this new passion of yours kick start. Adding to her talent, Vintage Heaven where the lesson is, is really cute and the host is so friendly and kind. They will be two enjoyable hours full of mew information, tasty cakes and wonderful tea!

EUGENIA, VINTAGE HEAVEN, AUG 2018

EVERYTHING about this experience was fantastic. Vintage Heaven is the perfect spot for this workshop, a beautiful little store with the prettiest little café in the back. Alice was very engaging, informative and patient. She had the perfect music on, the most beautiful calligraphy supplies for everyone and of course tea and one of the best Victoria Sponges I’ve ever had. She gave invaluable tips to help everyone with their calligraphy that I have put to use upon my return and will continue to do so. I highly recommend this workshop to everyone, Alice makes you fall in love with writing!

- FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS -

Do you run intermediate classes?

Yes! They are only once or twice a year.

Are calligraphy and hand writing related?

Short answer: No. When you are writing in calligraphy, your speed is much, much slower, and you are copying a decorative alphabet that someone else has designed (while you are learning). Think of it more like drawing lines and shapes rather than writing....If you have lovely hand writing, it may mean that you have the attention to detail that is required for Modern Calligraphy, so you may be at a slight advantage, but believe me, I've seen other calligraphers' hand writing, and some of it's terrible! Anyone can learn as long as you have lots and lots of patience and attention to detail.

What equipment do you use?

I switch between a straight and oblique penholder, a Nikko G nib, and I use Higgins Eternal Black Ink for practice, and I mix black gouache or a Japanese ink stick with water from scratch for professional work. My favourite white ink is Dr Ph Martins Bleedproof White.  I use Daler Rowney A4 Layout Paper for practicing.
